Abstract

Different types of Quaternary sediments are documented in the vicinity of Chapernal, during the study of natural hazards in Costarica. The fluvial gravel forms several terrace levels along valleys in the mountains. They downstream into typical alluvial fans in areas where the streams enter the plains. The Quaternary carbonates (newly recognized rock) occur either in form of travertine cascades or in matrix of cemented conglomerate interlayers within the fluvial gravel. The mangrove swamp typically developed in the litoral zone protects the shores against the wave erosion.
