Abstract

Samples taken from the medieval paintings made in Bohemia, 15th Century (Master of Litoměřice altar, Master of Rokycany altar and Master of Rakovník altar) were investigated from the calcareous nannofossil point of view. The sediments used for the glue-chalk foundation on wooden boards are of the Upper Maastrichtian age according to presence of Arkhangelskiella maastrichtiana, Nephrolithus frequens and Cribrosphaerella daniae and were deposited in shallow epicontinental marine environment (common specimens of Lucianorhabdus inflatus and Kamptnerius magnificus) of boreal province indicated by Prediscosphaera stoveri and absence of low-latitude species. Such sediments are not known from the territory of Bohemia and they had to be imported from the NW Europe, nowadays the Netherlands, NW Germany, Denmark, and/or N Poland.
