Abstract

In 2005 and 2006, the Czech Geological Survey participated in the Programme of technical cooperation of the Czech Republic in Afghanistan. The project was carried out in cooperation among GET s.r.o. (coordinator of the project), Charles University, Ministry of Mines and Industry of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the Geological Survey of Afghanistan (GSA). First negotiations between Czech and Afghan partners were carried out in 2003. The project was implemented in 2005 and 2006, mainly through field courses and training of Afghan geologists in three provinces. In the Herat Province, the Suah Ab gypsum deposit was preliminarily assessed as a source of raw material for cement industry. The Ceste Sharif marble was assessed as a source for dimension stone production. In the Parvan Province, limestone from the Jabal Seraj, Ghorband, Salang and Panshjer and gypsum from Konadi and Qalae Baqi were assessed as a raw material for cement industry. In the Kabul Province, structural and petrological investigation was carried out on the territory of the Fabul Block. Moreover, the Callaw coal was evaluated as raw material for local power station. During 2006, field courses for geologists from GSA were organized in Parvan Province, closely to the Jabal Seraj cement factory and its surroundings (Ghorband, Salang, Panshjer). Within the framework of the project, raw materials for the Jabal Seraj cement factory in the Salang Valley were evaluated with good results.
