Abstract

During the recent studies of a new oyster collection gathered in 2000 from the Plaňany quarry near Kolín (Upper Cretaceous), several specimens resembling the species Gryphaeostrea canaliculata (J. Sowerby) have been identified. However, preliminary examinations of this material show that the specimens (left, originally attached valves) differ from this species in being considerably larger and possessing other distinctive morphological features, e. g„ extraordinarily expressed lateral wing-like extensions. The results of detailed investigation of this interesting oyster will be summarized in a special paper.
