Country Review

SLOVAKIA

According to the text of the Final Protocol from the Kyoto 1997, Slovakia has agreed to reduce its aggregate emissions of GHG by 8% from the level of the base year 1990 during the first commitment period of the years 2008 to 2012. The Protocol has been signed in February 26, 1999 and its ratification by the government has been approved in January 2002. Emissions of CO2 per capita are decreased, (7.7tonns per year and capita) but this amount is still twice the worldwide average. In spite of this fact, the Kyoto conclusion – to diminish the volume of emissions about 8 % at the level before 1990 has been fulfilled.

The aggregate amount of carbon dioxide emissions produced on the Slovak republic territory is 42 mil. Tons (2001) and represents 0.2% overall world emissions of this gas.

From this amount, 81% is share of electricity and heat production, 12% belongs to transport and processes in industry produce 7 % of emissions in question. Slovenske elektrarne j.s. covers 85% electricity consumption by production in nuclear, heating and hydro power stations. (Approximately, almost equal portion for each type of electricity production) The biggest producer of CO2 emissions is US Steel Ltd. Kosice which annual production is almost 11.5 mil. tons (2003). Beside of this further five companies produce more than 1 mil. tons of CO2 yearly. About 40% of the Slovak inhabitants are supplied with heat and hot water. There are 3 100 heat sources of which is 1 300 as DH (district heating - heat power plants, municipal DH system, block heat sources) classified. These DH heat sources are operated by 1 200 utilities. The remaining 1 800 heat sources are considered as individual.
