Institute of Geology and Mineral Exploration (IGME), Greece
The Institute of Geology and Mineral Exploration (IGME) is the scientific, research organisation of Greece dealing with every aspect of geosciences. It was established in 1976 as a successor of Institute of Geology and Underground Exploration (IGEY) and it is supervised by the Minister of Development, deputy Minister of Energy. Recently its status has been slightly modified with emphasis given on its research character and its new principal tasks with emphasis on geothermal energy.
The prime function of IGME is to act as an advisor to the Greek government in all aspects of geosciences as well as in the legislation of natural resources. The principal tasks of IGME are to carry out geological research, mapping, data storage and advisory activities in connection with the environment and the utilisation and conservation of natural resources. IGME carries out research and exploration in almost the full spectrum of earth sciences and also provides consultant services to government, local authorities and private companies.
The main fields of its activity are: groundwater resources, geo-energy with special emphasis on geothermal energy and CO2 storage, mineral resources, engineering geology, environmental studies, mining and ore beneficiation studies, geo-mapping and geo-information. IGME employs a total of 730 persons of which 260 are scientists most of which have post-graduate degrees (M.Sc., Ph.D.). IGME has a long experience in the research of geothermal resources, has participated and lead many EU funded projects. Recent participation includes the two EU FP5 projects for CO2 storage (GESTCO and NASCENT) and membership of CO2net.
A review of ALBANIA & FYROM will be carried out by IGME in collaboration with national parties.
