As an executive authority of the state geological survey, the Czech Geologicl Survey undertakes regional geological research proceeded from mapping on the basis of which it succeeds in compiling and editing a wide range of geological and thematic maps. Geological maps and those derived serve as the basis of gathering geological knowledge of the state territories as well as its applications.

Small scale geological maps

Since its foundation in 1919, the Czech Geological Survey has been conducting geological mapping on the territory of our country, first Czechoslovakia, later the Czech Republic. After the World War II it was the first country in the world whose territory was continuously, but step by step, being captured and put on individiual maps at a scale of 1:200,000 (Svoboda et al.). Extensive legends, or explanatory texts, accompanying these maps have been published, too, where basic knowledge of regional geology of the state territory can be found. Last but not least, an atlas of synoptic maps at a scale of 1:000,000 and maps at 1:500,000 have been edited and printed.

Geological and thematic maps

However, the Czech Republic has reached another priority worldwide � in the coverage with more detailed geological maps. As the first institute in the wold, the Czech Geological Survey has finished a series of geological and thematically oriented maps at a scale of 1:50,000 reflecting the whole of the Czech Republic territory (C�cha et al.). This work, the publication of which was completed at the end of the 1990s, consists of 1651 maps, representing the following spheres:

geological maps
hydrogeological maps
maps of geophysical indication and interpretation
maps of mineral resources
maps of engineering-geological regional planning
maps of geochemical mineral and rock reactivity
maps of soils and soil structure
maps of ground-water chemistry
maps of environmental geofactors

Some of the map sheets have been published with explanations. The geological maps at a scale of 1:50,000, accompanied with vectors, unified with the legend and finally sewn together, form the GeoCR 50 (GIS) information level.

General geological maps at a scale of 1:25,000

Detailed, 1:25,000 scale, geological mapping could be renewed after the CGS�s completing the 1:50,000 scale map series. On the basis of the demands of state and local authorities, preferential mapping focused on selected territories of higher environmental protection or on plan-development areas. Since the year 1997, more than 80 map have been created of many areas, such as the Bohemian Forest (�umava) and Giant Mts (Krkono�e) National Parks, Protected Landscape Areas of the ��r Hills (��rsk� vrchy) and Jesen�ky Mts., the regions of K�ivokl�t and Plze�, the Labe valley, the Doupov Mts. (Doupovsk� hory), Malen�k and the Odra valley, and the Vset�n region. Some of those maps have been printed along with appropriate explanatory texts.

Digitized geological maps at a scale of 1:25,000 form the GeoCR 25 geoscientific level, thus representing the basis of the National Geological Map Database of the Czech Republic, which is being created nowadays.

Apart from placing the published and manuscript maps at the user�s disposal in the Archive Reading/Study Room, the CGS consecutively provides an on-line mapping access via the Map Server database application as well as an on-line Map Shop.
