CGS Publishing Office

Eng. Patrik Fiferna
Head of the Department

As early as the time of the institute’s foundation, the publishing activities were perceived as its indispensable part, and hence the Publishing Office has been incorporated into the statutes of the Czech Geological Survey. The publishing functions represent preserving the Survey’s materials in printed form, geological and derived maps at various scales as well as books on given themes – such activities not only mean keeping them, but also presenting them to the public, to the state and private organizations and individuals who are interested in the research and development problems the CGS’s staff members deal with. In 1920, a geological map at a scale of 1:25,000 was published; a year later, the Reports and the Library series began to come out; in April 1925, the first issue of the Bulletin was printed (called Bulletin of Geosciences nowadays); still in the 1920s, the Paleontological Reports appeared, etc. Just in the last ten years, 1996–2006, the company published as many as 600 titles.

The publishing activities and their staff and technical equipment have always been connected with the needs of presenting the realized research and acquired knowledge and with the current social trends and economic conditions. Following in positive experience of the previous period of time, the Publishers’ work concurrently strives to meet new requirements year by year.
