Assistance aimed at the restoration of geological institutions
A three-year project began in 2005 with the intention of assisting reconstruction of the geological organizations in Afghanistan. The project involves teaching petrology, structural geology and remote sensing at the Kabul universities (this part of the project is carried out by experts from the Faculty of Science, Charles University) and field mapping of selected localities.
In 2005 work specifically focused on decorative stones (marbles) at Cheshte Sharif and gypsum for the cement industry at Suah Ab was undertaken in Herat province. Chemical analyses of marbles and gypsum were carried out and marbles were also subject to geomechanical tests. Field operations in 2006 were undertaken on the lignite deposit at Callaw in Kabul province and on raw materials for cement in Parván province. Field
studies in Parván province continued in 2007. Black marbles at Gazag were also investigated.
