Regional Geology of Moravia
RNDr. Jiří Otava, CSc.
Head of the Department
The majority of geological works, research and expert activity in the Moravia area is concentrated in the Department of the Regional Geology of Moravia. The research orientation of the department, besides the compilation of the geological maps at different scales, is focused on the environmental protection issues. Why the devastated rock environment together with poluted horninové prostředí, které je, spolu se znečištěným air is the critical causation of common occurrence of civilization deceases in the Czech Republic.
Basic geological research which represented the greatest portion of its activities in past is recently often connected to the ecologically oriented projects. The majority of research works continues namely in regions of important industrial agglomerations and in protected landscape areas. The compilation of seamless geological map at the scale 1:50,000 belonged to the most important projects at the beginning of this decade. These maps are intended for the state administration authorities of all leveles, to private sector, schools and both professional and lay public. Also the county raw material studies, ecological maps and expertises about the propriety for solid communal and industrial waste disposals serve as essential material for decission-making and land-use planning.
Main results in the last years
Among the mapping campaigns the main outcomes of the Departments´ researchers are represented by particular map sheets and text explanations of the project Basic and special-purpose geological mapping of the Czech Republic at the scale 1:25,000 and the production of regional geological and hydrogeological maps and regional studies. The regional monography Geology of Brno was finished recently having been based on the new mapping of the Brno agglomeration at a scale 1:25,000. From large scale maps the published Geological map of the Western Carpathians and adjacent areas at a scale 1:500,000 (in cooperation with SGU of Dionýz Štúr in Bratislava) and Geological map of the CR 1:500,000 should be noted. New 1:25,000 geological mapping has been in progress since 2001 in the Protected Landscape Area of Žďárské vrchy, in the Hrubý and Nízký Jeseník Mts. and in the Moravian gate area.
International activities
Researchers of the Department have participated in many geological expedition abroad (mapping v Irak, Iran, Libya, Nicaragua, Peru, El Salvador, Mongolia), geochemical prospecting in Syria, prospecting of base metal and gold ores in Mongolia, Tanzania, Zambia and Cuba). Many specialists have acted in many countries of almost all continents as experts, advisers ore university lecturers.
