Geological Hazards

The proposed research activities are in line with the National Policy for Research, Development and Innovations of the Czech Republic for the years 2016-2020, with perspective until 2025. The sub-chapter of the Ministry of the Environment related to the subject of Sustainable development of the landscape and human settlements mentions: “Preparation of professional data based on the applied research results for the protection and use of the rock-environment, groundwater and mineral resources and minimizing the burden brought about by anthropogenic influence on the landscape (for instance land acquisition, contamination, the strain put on the conditions of exploration, inventory, investigation and evaluation of geological settings, natural resources and geo-factors”).

The Czech Geological Survey will be in charge of the following subjects:

  • Carry out the duties of regional geologists, hydrogeologists and economic geologists to cater for the needs of national and local administration, expert advice reporting, introduction of geological aspects in legislation of land-use planning by communities and regional administration bodies.
  • Documentation and research of geo-hazards, including their ranking, on the regional and local scale, solution of problems related to negative man-made impacts on the environment (old loads left after mining, contamination of the rock environment and possible health risks).
  • Designing the portal of the Geological Survey and providing information about geological hazards for professional and general public.

The research of geo-hazards will also include engineering-geological investigations in the CGS. The work will be in line with the INSPIRE directive of the European Commission – in particular with its implementation in the areas prone to natural hazards.

Strategic research targets in 2016 – 2020

These targets follow up on the results achieved in the previous period and are based on the priorities aimed at specialized research, experimental development and innovations in the Czech Republic and on the strategic documents of the Ministry of the Environment. In the case of floods or other emergency situations these require a rapid situation assessment, including delivery of relevant results in the frame of web applications to the general public.

The results of the research will be utilized by the towns and smaller communities and by the National Environmental Fund for evaluating requests for subsidies from the European Funds from the operational program ´Environment 2014-2020´ in line with the current program documents. The results will be then used for the needs of the Fire and Rescue Service Direction of the Czech Republic in the frame of a new methodology of the landslide warning system application. This will be used as guidance for emergency procedures utilized by the Czech Statistical Office within the geo-information aided natural disaster survey already in force in the EU-countries.

In order to achieve those targets the work related geo-hazard studies will concentrate on the following priority subjects:
