Regional Geological Maps

The Czech Geological Survey has created a series of geological maps for tourists. On the reverse side of these maps the geologically interesting features of the area are described. This series of maps has been published at different scales.

Geological Map of the Jizera-Lusatia-Giant Mountains at a scale of 1 : 100,000 with explanatory notes

This coloured geological map has been compiled by specialists from the geological surveys of Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic. It covers a large area of the West Sudeten Crystalline Complex (about 22,000 km2). It includes the environs of Dresden, Lusatia, the Kaczawa River Mountains, the Owl Mountains, the Lusatian Mountains, the Jizera Mountains, and the Polish and Czech Giant Mountains. The geological map is complemented by small sketch maps of chosen areas illustrating the tectonic structure and other information. The explanatory notes are in Czech and English. Synoptic Geological Map of Prague and Environs at a scale of 1 : 100,000

In addition to the geological map it includes geological places of interest. This synoptic map was compiled from 13 map sheets of geological maps at a scale of 1 : 25,000. The underlying geology in given area is very varied. There are rocks from Proterozoic and early Paleozoic Era, Cretaceous, Tertiary and particularly Quaternary sediments. The map was published in 1995 in a Czech and an English version.

Geological map of the North Bohemian brown Coal Basin and its surroundings at a scale of 1 : 100,000

In addition to showing the geology of the North Bohemian brown coal basins, this map also shows the geological structure of the crystalline complex of the eastern part of the Ore Mountains, the neovolcanic geology of the Doupov Mountains and the western part of the Central Bohemia Uplands and the adjacent areas of the Central Bohemian Permo-Carboniferous of the Czech Cretaceous basins. The Quaternary deposits of the whole area are also shown. The map has a comprehensive stratigraphic legend and a geological cross-section that provides much information about this geologically complicated territory which, of all the areas in the Czech Republic, shows the most anthropogenic influence. The map also provides a review of important features, nature reserves, national parks and protected landmarks.
