Maps at 1 : 25,000 scale

The Czech Geological Survey is undertaking a programme of detailed mapping at a scale of 1 : 25,000. Mapping of the country at this scale is still in progress. A list of the maps in this series that are currently available is given in the list of published maps in the right menu. The compilation of thematic 1 : 25,000 scale maps covering some areas which have been the focus of special projects has already been completed. Explanatory notes to these map sheets are also published as booklets; they describe in detail the geological composition and structure of the area covered by the map sheet as well as giving information about engineering and economic geology and other relevant features.

Geological maps at a scale of 1 : 25,000

Detailed geological mapping of the country at a scale of 1 : 25,000 had already begun by 1970, and was continued up to the early 1990’s. During the following years emphasis was placed on compiling and publishing a complete series of 1 : 50,000 scale maps. In 1998, mapping at the detailed scale resumed. Priority has been given to mapping those areas from which information is required by national authorities for planning purposes. This includes urban areas and industrial complexes, as well as the large areas designated for environmental protection. Some emphasis has also been given by the CGS to mapping in areas of the Czech Republic that can provide new information essential for the interpretation of the geological structure and evolution of the country. Since 1998, the information obtained from geological mapping has been incorporated in the comprehensive Geographic Information System GEOČR 25. Copies of published maps can also be provided in digital format on an interactive DVD (Prices can be found on the CGS bookshop page).

Geological maps of the bedrock at a scale of 1 : 25,000

Bedrock maps show the geology beneath the Quaternary cover of an area. They show the outcrops of pre-Quaternary geological formations and the structures exposed at surface, together with an interpretation of the projection these outcrops and structures beneath the existing areas of Quaternary cover.

Maps of mineral and prognostic resources at a scale of 1 : 25,000

These maps show the regional distribution of deposits of raw materials, the reserves that they contain and areas in which the discovery of new resources has been predicted. They provide information about the exploitation of raw materials at present and the possibilities for the future. They show the resources available at present and the impact on the landscape caused by mining them. A number of map sheets in the mineral resources series since 2002 have been available to download in PDF format (in Czech version).

Maps of environmental geofactors at a scale of 1 : 25,000

The series of maps of environmental geofactors contains a range of complementary information required for the protection of the environment, for planning land-use, for designing strategies for the development of selected areas, and for planning the construction of buildings and public facilities etc. For these purposes, information about the basic characteristics of the underlying geology, the occurrence of raw materials and of groundwater resources in the area concerned must be known. A number of these geofactor maps since 2010 have been available to download in PDF format (in Czech version).

Engineering-geological maps at a scale of 1 : 25,000

This series of maps provide information about the engineering-geological conditions in a given area, mainly in agglomerations of residence and municipal regions. They are designed for use in regional and local planning, for example in the location of areas suitable for housing and recreational facilities, roads and railways and the selection of sites for waste disposal. They are an essential tool for assessing the geological factors that must be taken into account when undertaking any engineering work and also for predicting the impact that engineering work will have on natural conditions during construction and after the facilities are put into use.

Explanatory notes to maps at a scale of 1 : 25,000

Explanatory notes were published only for some of the map sheets in the series of purpose-designed geological and ecological maps at a scale of 1:25,000. These are booklets which give an explanation of the geology of the area covered by the relevant sheet, together with details of the hydrogeology, economic geology and other features of interest. Directions for using this series of purpose-designed geological and ecological maps explain the information shown in the maps and the purpose for which they were compiled. A glossary of terms used in the legends of individual maps is included. Electronic versions of the Explanatory Notes and Directions for Use are accessible in the Digital archive (see link to the Czech version below).
