Geology for all

Popularization of the Earth Sciences and sharing the results of geological research with the public is one of the priorities of the Czech Geological Survey. Throughout the existence of the CGS, its staff have endeavoured to improve our understanding of geological evolution and the Earth’s resources by geological mapping and research. More recently, with the advent of our information-based society and innovations in publication, it has been possible to communicate knowledge in understandable and eye-catching formats to everyone with an interest in the natural processes that affect us. Public outreach by the CGS embraces the professional community and the public alike, ranging from school children, students and parents to tourists and pensioners.

Important geological localities of the CR

The database contains records of the locations in the Czech Republic, which documented numerous examples of highly diverse geological phenomena, significant occurrences of rocks, minerals and fossils.

Virtual museum

A virtual museum of the CGS offers a rich photographic doccumentation to the collections stored in the Czech Geological Survey.

Decorative stones

The Czech Republic has a rich tradition in the extraction and processing of natural stone. The increasing demand for good-quality material that is suitable for decorative purposes makes a considerable contribution to the development of stone-working branches in industry.

Publications of general interest

Among the titles listed in the on-line bookstore of the CGS you will also find a selection of popular leaflets, postcards, books and maps that contain information about fossils and minerals, geological processes, and the scenery of the national parks and protected areas that will be of interest to tourists, teachers, students and children. Because they are mostly in Czech, we offer you a selection of publications in English.
