Remote sensing

The remote sensing working group, which belongs to the Department of Regional Geology of Crystalline Complexes, is occupied with the interpretation of satellite or airborne imagery as well as all accessible geo-information data. Most of the modern remote sensing methods are directly applicable to different types of geological projects, e.g. geological mapping, structural analysis, prospecting for natural resources, geomorphologic studies or the identification of geological hazards.

The remote sensing working group was newly established in 2006 within the Department of Regional Geology of Crystalline Complexes. Besides of aerial imagery, we use a wide variety of state of the art satellite technologies from optical sensors like Landsat, ASTER, Quickbird to radar systems (ERS-2, Radarsat) for the purposes of geological interpretations.

The spheres of the utilization of remote sensing data include – geological mapping, structural analyses, prospecting for natural resources, geomorphologic studies, evaluation of geological hazards, analysis of mining affected areas, and a number of other activities of the Czech Geological Survey. Apart from the projects of foreign cooperation in Mongolia, Salvador, Peru, and Costa Rica, remote sensing is gradually implemented into geological studies in the Czech Republic.  Software used by our working group comprises ERDAS Imagine 9.1, ENVI 4.3 and ArcMap 9.2.

Because scientific methods evolve continually even our working group plans on extending its activities towards the interpretation and analysis of hyperspectral data and the utilization of field spectrometry when identifying minerals and rocks.
