Important geological localities of the Czech Republic
The Geographic Information System (GIS) of the important geological localities of the Czech Republic keeps record of these important sites gathered by the Czech Geological Survey since 1992. At the beginning the registration was kept in the form of an evidence card, since 1998 in the form of a GIS. This geodatabase consists not only of protected geological localities, but also of important geological localities suggested for protection and additional important localities of high scientific and landscape-conservation value.
Nowadays, the GIS consists of more than 1800 records that cover geological characteristic of the sites, degree of conservation, objective of protection, conflicts of interest etc. Most of the records are supplemented by photographical documentation.
Creation of the geodatabase follows regulations of the Czech National Committee of the ProGEO, the Czech Ministry of the Environment, and the Czech Agency for Nature and Landscape Conservation. Many specialists from the Czech Geological Survey and from other institutions have participated in filling this register of geological localities and also helped with the expert evaluation of this system.
