International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction and Development Cooperation CGS in Georgia

October 14, 2021

Globally, the frequency and intensity of natural disasters is increasing due to climate change. October 13 was International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR). Not only on this day, we think about how we can prevent natural disasters. The Czech Republic has a long-standing tradition in developing and implementing DRR strategies. It should not come as a surprise that the Czech-UNDP Partnership for SDGs actively supports projects focused on DRR in our priority countries. In article (below), you can take a closer look at the Challenge Fund project of the Czech Geological Survey and Georgian NEA who work together on geological risk expertise in the Kazbegi area. The current project aims to improve the ability of Georgian Specialists to comprehensively assess the hazard of debris flow and mudflow. The poster presents the results of our first field expedition, which brought many interesting suggestions and data. Geodynamic natural processes are very difficult to prevent. However, it is possible to mitigate their consequences to avoid disasters and loss. This is mainly due to effective spatial planning with high-quality engineering and geological data. The main idea of this project is not only to stimulate cooperation between the CGS and the Georgian NEA, but also to show a conceptual preventive approach to risk reduction. This will lead to improved spatial planning in the future. And preventing construction in vulnerable areas to reduce remediation costs.
