Arba Minch Univeristy

Education programs aimed at improving the quality of MSc. and Ph.D students at the Arba Minch University and Addis Ababa University has been part of the activity with the full support of the CDA. The program has been implemented in the years 2016-2018 focusing on structural geology, engineering geology, seismology, geomorphology and geohazards.

Training to junior geologists

Field training to selected junior geologists at various public institutes of Ethiopia including regional offices has been implemented in the years 2016 to 2018. This was designed to help curb the pressing problem of the need to overcome the high turnover of experienced professionals from public organization to private sector. Mentoring and experience sharing training workshops organized in three consecutive years focusing on the geohazards and risk assessment, field geological mapping and use of remote sensing data extraction were implemented.

Seismic hazard monitoring station establishments

Four narrow band seismic monitoring stations have been established with capacity to detect micro-earthquakes of short period nature with important implication from hazards point of view. Due to the more frequent occurrence of such tremors over the big magnitude teleseismic events these are regarded an advantage to assist in the existing few broad band seismic monitoring stations of Institute of Geophysics, Space Science and Astronomy (IGSSA) of Addis Ababa University. Integration of the monitoring with the existing (9 stations) broadband seismic stations will aid in constraining the information on earthquake hazard vulnerability of the population centers in many major cities located on the edge or middle of the active Main Ethiopian Rift. Three of the stations are established across the southern Main Ethiopia Rift at: Nech Sar Park (main outpost), Arba Minch town (Abaya Campus) and the Chencha escarp (Enset Park). The fourth station is located further away at Shashamane, in the compound of the Geological survey of Ethiopia’s storage facility.
